Erratic Mouse

My mouse did the same and the problem turned out to be a
sympton of the processor being over-clocked (running at
900 for a 500 processor(?)); all manner of other damage
had been caused by then and the machine went into rapid
decline. It is probably unlikely to be your problem but I
thought I'd mention it because this happened to me before
the crashes and hanging started to occur regularly.
