View Full Version : Cannot add com port

Fred
December 7th 03, 12:24 AM
I have added a serial cable that is attached to my cell
phone so the cell phone can be used as a wireless modem.
However, there is only 1 com port listed in Device
Manager (com 1) and that is already in use, so the cell
phone software cannot detect my cell phone. I tried to
add a com port through the Add Hardware Wizard, but it
comes up with a yellow flag in Device Manager and does
not work. I looked into the Bios setup but cannot find
any reference to adding or enabling additional com ports
there. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Most computers come with two com ports which can be enabled in the
BIOS setup. They are com ports 1 and 2. If you have a laptop
computer, one of the com ports may be assigned to an IR channel and
the other may be assigned to an internal modem. You would have to
deactivate one of them to acquire that com port for other uses. The
com port assigned to a PCI modem does not show up in the Ports list
of Device Manager. You would have to look at Modems to see what
port it uses. The com port of PCI modems can often be changed to
another number since they quite likely will use nonstandard I/O
addresses.

I always thought that there should 2 com ports. However,
I just went into the Bios setup for the 3rd time to see
if I have missed anything. All I see under periferal
configuration is Serial Port A and a Parallel Port, but
no reference to com ports. By the way, I am using a
desktop pc, and the modem is on com 4. Any other
suggestions would be most welcome.

page and see what I can find.

I have read the other posts about this problem and my
question is, "What in the world would be using COM1
if the only device plugged into it is your phone?"

COM1 shouldn't show as being in use unless it is "seeing"
your phone.

I wish it was that simple. The computer was custom built
for me a couple of years ago. The computer shop ordered a
new tower case and installed an Intel Desktop Board model
D850GB with a Pentium 4 processor. I furnished the hard
drive, cd burner, floppy, tape drive, etc from my old PC
as those items were relatively new. That way, I had the
Pentium 4 without buying an entire new PC. Unfortunately,
that shop is no longer around or I would check with them.
I just browsed on the Intel site and there is quite a bit
of data on the board but nothing to solve my problem. I
really don't know where to go next.

You may have misread the original post. I am unable to
connect my cell phone to Com1 as it is in use. It is used
by HotSync Manager for my PDA.

I have the same board. Right Click on My Computer;
select Properties>Hardware>Device Manger>Ports (Com & LPT)>Communicatiosn
Port (Com1)>Port Settings.Advanced and select form the range of COM1 to COM
256.

I appreciate the suggestion, but that will only change
Com 1. What I need to do is add a 2nd Com port for the
phone and leave Com 1 for the PDA. Do you know how i can
do that?

APOLOGIES - APOLOGIES - APOLOGIES

I tried to do what you just suggested early this morning,
but was turned back by a warning message that continuing
would make Com 1 unstable. However, I ignored that
warning just now and selected Com 3. I then reinstalled
the phone software, hooked up the cable and have just
tested the setup with 2 successful faxes. Many thanks for
your help. The only strange thing is that the PDA shifted
to Com 3 along with the phone, but both devices are
working. I do not understand how 2 devices can share a
Com port without a conflict - do you?

What's plugged into the com port that you have? Can you unplug whatever that
is to use the cell phone?
