View Full Version : IRQL NOT EQUAL ~ USB ~ Prefetch

I upgraded from Windows XP Home to XP Pro. I didn't know to unplug my USB
battery before doing this. Everything seemed fine until I went to upload
digital images to my computer and discovered that the USB ports were not
working (computer not recognized ... checked the battery status and it
wasn't recognized). I unplugged all USB devices and then uninstalled the USB
devices (ports and hubs) in the device manager. When windows restarted, it
found the USB ports and hubs and when I plugged in my APC battery and camera
they were recognized by Windows. That's when I started having intermittent
IRQL not equal blue screens upon boot up.

I've gone through all items in Device manager and none has a driver that's
not 5.1.2600. All the devices appear to be working; none had any caution or
problem marks. I saw in a separate post that someone (Gerald Oberman
5.14.03) suggested deleting the contents of the Prefetch folder and
disabling Prefetch in the registry. Is this a wise thing to try?

Does anyone have any suggestions of what to do? Should I unplug all USB
again and reinsert the XP Pro CD? Would it allow me to upgrade again and
hopefully fix the problem?

Also saw a tip by another MVP to uninstall Direct CD. I don't think this is
appropriate in my circumstances (but I do have Direct CD installed and
running)!

hi, from my experience with the irql.... is the software. people will
disagree. update your software and all your drivers for your usb hubs and
devices. good luck..bad driver or software. yo7u only get the blue screen
wihen tring to use the usb? if so, thats a good thing. let me tell you what
to do. go to best buy or equal. get yourself a pci usb port card. and
install it. i bet, i bet you have on-board usb.......disable it in your bios
and install the new card..the pci card is only $25.00. you probably have
some off the wall usb on-board hub, that does nothing but steal system
resoures.if you dont want to go my route. run some searches on
www.google.com on your usb device and the error your getting and youll find
out how to stamp the problem out. to get you started i ran a search for you.

The problem only occurs at boot up, so I don't know what is causing it. How
do I know where my USB is? I have Dell Dimension 4550. The battery backup
(APC BackUPS Office) is the only device (USB) attached at start up. I had
tried upgrading to their newest software and ended up uninstalling it as the
blue screen seemed to happen more often. Now I am using Windows XP native
Power Options drivers.

I think I've already done this (uninstalled the USB's). Unless I am missing
something on this page you've suggested. Nothing has any marks under USB. I
have

Intel 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
Intel 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub

There are 2 USB ports by the mouse/keyboard, and 2 on the front of the
computer (under the start button).
