View Full Version : Broadband with XP home

I think that XP home may be causing problems for my
Broadband. I connect to the net and it stays online for
about 5 minutes and then the connection drops.
At first i thought that this may have been caused by the
extension cable i was using, so i tried it on my laptop
(with windows 98) without the extension and it ran fine.
Now that i have a new extension cable i was expecting it
to work fine on the XP machine. But i still have the same
problem. The laptop works all the time, no matter how
long the extension cable is.
I seem to get a lot of 'CRC-Fast' errors but i dont know
what they are so it doesnt really help me out much.
Im using the BT Voyager 100 USB modem.
There is one strange thing that happens, and that is when
i re-install the broadband software and drivers , it will
connect fine to the internet and maybe drop once or twice
for the first 10 minutes or so but then after that it
would stay online all day....i dont really understand y
it does this.
If anyone is having the same or a similar problem or can
help me fix mine then i would be very gratefull if you
could get back to me....thanx

sounds bad.....i had the same problem with my motorola usb, ethernet modem.
i solved the problem by switching from usb to ethernet. "more stable" at
least thats what adelphia told me. works fine now. good luck.

this could be your problem ?
You can find the LAN autodisconnect parameter in the registry using
Regedit.exe at the run prompt:
find by clicking down to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\LanmanServer\Parameters
Purpose: The function is to disconnect idle sessions after a set number of
minutes.
The valid value range of this REG_DWORD value is -1 to 65535 minutes.
To disable autodisconnect set it to: -1 by rightclicking autodisconnect and
select edit, select decimal then type -1.
Setting Autodisconnect to 0 does not turn it off and results in very fast
disconnects, within a few seconds of idle time. (However, the RAS
Autodisconnect parameter is turned off if you set it to a value of 0.)

Chances are your cable modem has both a USB and an Ethernet connector.
The real question is if your computer has an ethernet card as well.
If so, unplug the usb cable, then get a CAT5 patch cable, plug one end
into the modem and the other in the card on your computer...viola!
If you don't have an ethernet card in your computer, that complicates
things just a little bit.

>You didn't say if your broadband was DSL or cable. If
it's cable, where your cable comes in, have a 2-1 splitter
with one outlet going to tv and one out going to modem.
Make sure you have very good connectors on the ends of the
cable. It is critical with cable modem. I actually had to
run a new cable and connections. Solved my problem.

I have DSL, but i dont think that the problem is with the
hardware....i think that it is XP's ****ty capability of
loading drivers on the go (well, mine's no good at it)
I have an Ethernet card but im already using it for my
network, and the DLS modem doesnt have a ethernet port.
