I'm using a 56 US robotics modem with XP Professional and
my problems is that my modem will automatically dial up
when ever I turn on my computer or if not then when my
computer has been on for a while.

Press <ctrl-alt-del> to see what's running. There may be a clue there.

Suspect programs that may phone home for updates, such as Windows update,
RealAudio, etc.

Install and run the free version of ADAware, from http://www.lavasoftusa.com
It can detect many 'freeloaders', and banish them if you wish.
