View Full Version : Slow access

I'm also annoyed with this XP running like molasses when
accessing programs. Yes I've removed Q811493 and no it
does not help. This is my latest find: When I right
click on an icon, the drop-down menu take more than a
minute to appear. Clicking to access the file will also
take as long. I've notice my D-link modem active during
this delay peroid. I turn off the modem and like magic,
the menu drop within seconds of the right cliking. the
program also opens much faster. This is just one of many
others that are giving me headaches.
Turning off firewall, virus protection, does not change
the problem. Only turning off the D-link modem.
Ps: The short cut icons do not access the same program,
they each link to diffent programs. I'm operating 1GHz
Pentium III, winXP SP2, 256MB SDRAM, 60GB non-partion
drive, FAT 32.
Please help!
Thank you.

look in Event Viewer at the logged errors.
1. To open Event Viewer, click Start, click Control Panel, double-click =
Administrative Tools, double-click Event Viewer and select System for =
system errors or Application for application errors. Look for Error in =
the Type column and double click on Error to reveal a Description of the =
error. This can be copied by using Clipboard Viewer (see later).
=20
2. Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you =
should double click for further information and you can copy using copy =
and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)
3. For some errors you will find "+ Related Knowledge Base Article", =
which if double clicked takes you to the Knowledge Base Article =
containing a suggested solution.
There always seems to be a step 2 but not always a step 3.=20
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports (Step 1). Run Event Viewer and =
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window which appears =
is a button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close =
Event Viewer. Now start your message ( email )and do a paste into the =
body of the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer =
Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the =
first paste after exiting from Event Viewer. It can be helpful to place =
a shortcut to Event Viewer on your Desktop.
Download Adaware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/ and =
use it to remove parasites.
How good is your housekeeping?
1. In Outlook Express empty your Deleted Items folder.
2. In Outlook Express run File, Folder, Compact All whilst OFFLINE.
3. Run Disk Cleanup. Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk
Cleanup.
4. Run Disk Defragmenter.=20
~~~~~~
Hope this helps.
Well, I'm not the only one having this problem I see. Molasses? Though the
delays are varied, usually about a minute...I've timed such 'hang ups' up to
5 minutes. In computers, that's Epoch time.
So, tell me again, why am I using XP? I can't burn, curmudgeon op system as
to allowing new programs, can't use on second computer in the home without
being thrown in jail, all to get an 1800mhz system operating at times slower
than an old PI; no make that an old 8088. 5 minute delay times!!!
Oh yea, all that time learning how to get around to troubleshoot and inspect
in '98 or ME...gone. Of course, as soon as I learn XP, microsoft will offer
their latest 'upgraded' yoke to keep us at their trough.
Of course I get all them automatic updates...which I always did myself
anyway!!!!...which means less 'control' over my own machine.
