I am using windows xp on a compaq purchased from
Bestbuy. I have had it for about 6 months now and the
last 3-4 months it keeps restarting for no reason. Ive
tried diagnostics, memory diagnostics, updating drivers,
scanning for viruses, and other's but i have found
nothing. I installed a Nvidia geforce FX 5200 video card
about a moth after it started this. I dont think thats
the problem. It takes 250watt power and i have a 250
watt power supply. I still cant get through a virus scan
without it freezing or restarting. It restarts on
different files so i cant find it that way.
I dont want to redo my windows and lose
everything so i am asking what to do. Anything would help

Are you hooked up to the net using a broadband connection (cable or
DSL)? If so, it may be triggering the "Wake on LAN" feature in your
BIOS. The computer gets a signal from the Modem through the NIC and
starts up. To stop this, go into your BIOS and turn off the Wake On
LAN feature.

this cause on average 10 restarts an hour? This is how
many im getting. I used to get a message after windows
booted up saying it recovered from a fatal error and it
says its a device driver but doesn't know which one.

Greetings --
Have you contacted Compaq's tech support about this issue? They
may have some known issues with that particular model.
To get started troubleshooting the cause of your problems, we'll
need to learn what specific errors are occurring and being recorded.
To get the error message from the blue screen (a.k.a. the BSOD --
Blue Screen of Death), you'll need to turn off WinXP's automatic
reboot "feature:" Right-click My Computer > Properties > Advanced >
Startup and Recovery > Uncheck "Automatically restart." The next time
your PC crashes, you'll be left with a blue screen full of memory
addresses and other seeming gibberish. The top 2 or 3 lines of this
screen will contain information that can help solve your problem.
Carefully write down these lines and post the exact text back here.
Hopefully, one of us will be able to provide some insight.
Additionally, you should check your Event Logs to see if they can
shed any light on the matter, To do so, Right-click My Computer >
Manage > Event Viewer > System and Application. Record the specifics
of any red-flagged error messages and post the exact text back here.
Again, hopefully, one of us will be able to provide some insight.

you need to get a bigger watt power supply, you can find a 400 watt one on
the internet cheap. 250 watts was at it's limit back in the pentium 100
days. if you just tried to just add a new cdrom or another hard-drive
instead to that power hungry video card you added you would of had the same
if not more problems with blue screens and reboots.

Greetings --
While a power supply is a possible source of trouble, it's not
particularly likely, in this case. And 250 watts is more than
adequate for most home PC purposes.

I'm getting exactly the same problem - restarts and driver
error messages so I'd also like more info on the change I
need to make. thanks.
