In XP, I am occasionally web surfing- am already at a web site, and lo and
behold, cliking on a link brings up AOL to take over the connection- and
then an error message to say that I am no longer connected and would I like
to work offline?
What's up with this flaky XP stuff?

Your problem is totally unrelated to Windows XP.
It's related to your sloppy and careless web-surfing habits.

Why after 10 years of surfing would changing to XP result in careless web
surfing habits where no problems surfaced after years of using Windows 95,
Windows 98, Millenium, Windows NT.?????
Or why would it take 10 years of sloppy and careless web surfing habits not
show any problems until I switched to XP?
I simply clicked on an active link to surf to a link within a page on a web
site and I got disconnected and AOL took over.
The web site was not related to AOL in any way.....
I think your answer is a bit hasty and you have obviously confused me with
someone else you have a problem with.

Ignore Nicholas he has made several posts today which have been rude. Then
again people have been known to fake the name of people and give them a bad
name.
Back to your problem. So you use AOL to dial up, then minimise it and use
another Browser to view the Internet. Am I correct?

I have AT&T broadband, and use TCP/IP for my AOL address under ("bring yer
own access"). For a year under W98- this hasn't been a problem- now with
XP, AOL tries to start up by itself. It could be some java script/
association thing- for example- if I double click on a *.art file- it will
start aol up to view the proprietary art format of AOL.... but that is the
only one I know of- and I do not think *.art files are kosher for online web
art...I simply clicked on a hypertext link and off goes my connection and on
goes AOL trying to take control of the network connection. I found
something that may have been related and deleted it, will see if the
problem goes away.
However, there have been several other flaky things that have me concerned-
like I found it documented that the A: drive does not refresh.... it
doesn't even clank for a disk if you click on A: (explorer) when empty- it
simply indicates what used to be in the drive. A new disk will not refresh
to its new contents.

Khemyst,
It sounds like AOL may have taken over as your default internet application.
When it is first installed (or reinstalled) it asks if you want to do this.
It will ask again the first time you launch the program. It will also try to
take over as your default internet connection.
You can grab back control by using Internet Options> Connections. Make sure
your preferred connection is marked as the default. Over on the Programs
page (still in Internet Options), check the box for IE to check that it's
the default browser. Click OK. Launch IE and when it asks if it should be
the default, say yes.
Alternatively, if you have Service Pack 1 installed, you could use
Add/Remove Programs> Set Program Access and Defaults to reassign Internet
Explorer as the default browser.

Most likely your AOHell installation is bad, or the design of AOHell
prevents using a non-dial up connection. I wouldn't know which,
because I never decided to be raped by Ted.

Windows never refreshed simply because you clicked on the drive again,
you have to either press F5 or click somewhere else and then re-select
the A drive. Note: There are other methods to refresh, F5 is just
the easiest.

expect with moronic comments such as "What's up with this flaky XP stuff?"
Ask a stupid question, get a stupid answer.

I can get a hold of AOL on a toll-free line for free and they help me get
rid of their problems- can't say the same for Windows- because its an OEM
installation- Microsoft doesn't want to talk to me. ( I bought the XP from
a local computer dealer and not Best- Buy), so his answer is talk to
Microsoft..... If I had known this ahead of time, I would have bought it
from Best Buy or MS....

Does your local computer dealer not know HE IS responsible for providing
support for any OEM copies he sells? It is part of the OEM agreement.

Great, go cold turkey and delete all references to AOL from your
computer, then you are on the way to being a computer user. I have been
in computers since the Vic20 and Commodore64 and I have never allowed
AOL in my computers. You can check my registry and you will not "find"
any refernce to AOL. I have had XP since the day it came out in Beta and
I haven't had a crash or never had any problems surfing the net. I use
Netscape, Internet Explorer and Opera and they do not need AOL. The
world would be a better place sans AOL. :-)

For your information, and I now doubt you have been using PCs that long =
with the above comment; Netscape is owned by AOL, so you have it on your =
PC and in your registry. Even if you didn't have the Netscape browser =
installed, Netscape references are still in the registry relating to =
media items (ie WMP).

Your unawareness of computers is astounding. Using AOL also shows the
same. I have NO, read my lips, no references to AOL anywhere in my
