Joe;
Go to the various applications that are running and look for a
"Settings" or "Options".
Then look for something like "Load at start-up" or similar, disable
it.
Also try these:
Does this apply:
Some computers have issues with 811493 causing a slowdown, others do
not. (only if installed 28 May 2003 or earlier)
The issue seems to be a conflict with Windows Update 811493 and
antivirus applications.
Similar issues reported with McAfee, Norton, EZ Trust and possibly
others.
Uninstall 811493 from Control Panel Add/Remove Programs.
If a warning comes up about other applications, ignore it.
Uninstalling through Add/Remove Programs is far better than System
Restore to remove an application or fix.
Microsoft has stated they are working on the cause, so hopefully we
will get some definitive solution real soon.
Watch this link for status changes on this patch:
*****Microsoft UPDATED this page 28 May 2003*****
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=819634
If you up installed 811493 after 29 May 2003, you have the repaired
version and this is not likely the cause of your issues.
This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q815411
Otherwise:
Run an updated virus scan.
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
Run Defrag.
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Or

The processes running in the background are an integral part of the
operating system and need to be left alone.

This advice is patently incorrect.
OK, here's the solution to the OPs problem:
Start/Run type msconfig. Select the startup tab. This is a list of all
the startup programs. It is not immediately obvious which should or can
be disabled. So here is a convenient site which categorizes and
explains what most, if not all, of these do. You can make the choice
which to disable in msconfig.
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm#Select
Also, run disk cleanup and rid your machine of extraneous files,
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup.
Then, you need to defrag your disk. XP says it doesn't much need
degfragging, but that's an out and out exaggeration. This will take a
while the first time. Sytem Tools/Disk Defragmentor.
How much memory? 256MB is minimal, 512MB makes a world of difference to
performance.
Also check that your disk is using DMA: Control Panel/System/Hardware
Tab/Device Manager button/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers. Select Primary IDE
Channel/Properties/Advanced Settings Device 0/Transfer mode "DMA if
Available. The Current transfer mode should be Ultra DMA Mode X. Check
your drive documentation for the value of X.
HTH.

I hope the OP has your address, so you can help him out when his system
behaves strangely due to an unwisely disabled service.
