i previously wrote regarding a problem with my hp cd
writer; however, the only response i received was one
stating hp sucked anyway and that was why i was having a
problem...i would like to get an answer that could help me
if possible...please someone help...here's my prob...i'm
not sure if this is the category that i should be
writing my problem in, but if not, please tell me where to
do so...my cd writer will begin write speed test and then
tell me there was an error and no data was recorded to my
disk and i can try again but i will need another blank
disc available...i put in a new disk and click retry and
the same thing happens again...please help!!!

That was me and I am sorry. However, if you purchased the CDR, and it came
with a set of software other than Roxio or Nero (Ahead), then that is
probably the problem. You can get a free trial copy of Nero at
http://www.nero.com/en/index.html#root and give that a try. I have not used
the Nero software, but many swear by it. I use the Roxio, because that is
what most OEM manufactures supply now days. Roxio is a real bunch of you
know what, but they bought out Adaptec, who was pretty nice bunch. So, we
are stuck.

I would propose that you are more likely to get a viable answer from one of
the HP help forums -- like "comp.sys.hp.misc", or "comp.sys.hp.hardware"

Lindy, it might help if you told them what model your HP CDwriter is and
what software you're using to burn. Someone may have the same model and can
tell you what worked for them.
I had an HP 8210i (circa Win98). It originally shipped with the Adpatec
software and worked fine with that until XP was released. After that, I had
to search for a CD burning program that would work with it (Nero).

Most folks just starting out burning CD's make a few drink coasters so don't
get to alarmed about it.
Usually it's because of buffer underruns due to trying to burn at a speed
which is faster than the computer can send data to the buffer. If the
buffer becomes empty during the burn process a coaster is made every time.
If you have a speed setting in your burning software lower the setting until
your no longer making drink coasters.
Most folks usually end up getting better burning software than that provided
by the manufacturer.
I've tried several but have stuck with Nero Burning ROM.
Nero shows the percentage of data in the buffer graphically while burning
and I burn at a speed that keeps the buffer around 98% full at all times.

Hi, Joel.
Just to correct a slight inaccuracy...

Actually, Adaptec spun off their CD business into a new company, which they
named Roxio. Adaptec still exists, producing SCSI and other products. For
details, see www.adaptec.com and www.roxio.com.

Last I heard was that Roxio purchased Adaptec. So, thanks for the info.
There was some fellow, forgot his name, that was very helpful on the
newsgroups during the earlier days, and thought he was fired during the
takeover.
