printing to file

I seem to recall that I used to use Print to file, save as .prn (I think)
then open it with Irfanview which, after changing the file into a TIFF file,
was able to open it. It doesn't work anymore.

I searched help/support for articles or tutorials on printing to file, how
to use the choices of file-types, and what opens what, but found nothing so
far. Can anyone point me in the direction of any how-tos that are
available?
