View Full Version : Problems with migrating XP to new 160Gb HDD

Hi, All.
I'm have the problem trying to migrate my system from old HDD (IBM 60Gb) to
new one (Seagate 160Gb).
I clone boot partition from old to new drive using Norton Ghost 2003 (no
errors during this process), remove old drive, make new one as primary
master and restart computer.
Start process begins, switches to graphics mode and then comes very slowly,
and after 5-10 minutes freezes - no responds to keyboard.
I tried to boot in Safe mode, but process freezes after agp400.sys (or smth
about it).
When I changed drives back (old one as boot disk, new - as primary slave)
system boots without any problem. In Disk Administrator I can see new drive
and all partitions which I create before.
When I try to delete paritions, and recreate them once again (3 partitions
20+40+90 Gb), I receive an error on the last one - "Format did not complete"
(no errors in event log). I run Checkdisk - the result is "Check disk can
not be completed".
I reformat the drive on another PC (with Windows 2000 installed) without any
errors (full format with bad block checking), then repartition disk - also
without problems. In XP - can't start from boot partition, can't check of
format last partition.
Windows XP SP1 with all latest patches.
MB Asus P4B with latest BIOS (supporting drives > 130Gb)
Disk shown in Disk Manager as 160Gb.
All partitions - NTFS, with default parameters.
May be anybody have any idea?
TIA

Hello
Well your best bet was to just load the OS on your New drive,
and then setup your old drive as a slave, and just move your data
over. Some however would not agree with me but doing a fresh
and clean install always works best.
But know your in the process of trying to figure out where the problem
is and would have been better to do a clean and fresh install, which
could be more spent, but woth in the long run.

Hi, Valery.
Did you get a driver diskette with your new 160 GB HD? You probably need to
give WinXP Setup a chance to integrate that into your installation of WinXP.
The WinXP CD-ROM has plenty of smarts to use the HD as a secondary drive.
And WinXP's Disk Management can easily handle it, too, as a secondary drive.
But, to BOOT FROM that drive, you'll need to let Setup customize your copy
of WinXP.
Physically install your new drive (with everything Ghosted onto it) as the
primary master. Then boot from the WinXP CD-ROM and choose first to Install
and then to Repair WinXP. When prompted, press F6 to install drivers for
your mass storage device, and then insert the driver diskette to let WinXP
Setup find the right drivers and install them.
Let us know how this works out for you. These big drives are still new
enough that we all need to learn from each other how to handle them.

Hi there,
Wonder if this will help. I cloned a Windows XP boot partition from
one drive to another. (Not a drive clone, but rather a partition
clone). Both were 20gb.
I found upon booting up the new drive (on its own .. no other drives
present), that I would get stuck at the Windows XP screen .. you know
the one.
[Long painful story cut short]
I booted up with a Windows 95 boot disk and at the A:\ prompt, I typed
"FDISK /MBR" ...
It seemed to work for me. Hope it helps.
Cheers.

Hi,
I check driver for my HDD on Seagate - there are no drivers available at
all. They notice that WinXP has all necessary drivers included.
As well I try to boot from XP CD and use Repair feature - without any
success.
At last I attached my new 160Gb drive as primary slave, WinXP found it and
installs its own drivers, ask to reboot (sucessfully). After reboot I delete
all partitions and start to creating them again. I create and format the
first 2 partitions (20 & 40 Gb), and create the third (100Gb), but I can't
format the last one - error during format.
I tried to run checkdisk - it stops on this partition.
Of cource, I install the patch from MS with updated atapi.sys - no effect.
I think the problem hides somewhere in XP driver subsystem, but I don't have
any ideas what to do next.

Update you PC's BIOS. It may not like the 160GB hard drive, with the
current BIOS.
