View Full Version : My RAM is crazy

After installing XP I'm updating from 128 to 512 in my HP
Pavillion PIII. The system will work with 318MB, but
when I try to put the other SIMM in to make it up to 512,
it just keeps cycling through the startup... never gets
to Windows screen. The simm is tested OKAY and either
256 will work in either slot, but both will not let the
OS complete. With both in the system checks (before OS
starts) at the full 512...

ANTBODY HELP ME PLEASE!

First of all this is not a Windows or Microsoft probelem this is a hardware
problem. Secoundly it dosn't sound like you are installing SIMM's more like
DIMM's (SIMM's are short 30 or 72 pin memory modules that are quit old).

I would recomend calling HP support your system may not support the brand of
ram or may have a bios problem over 318.

Run memtest-86 (http://www.memtest86.com), it's FREE and easy, and doesn't
require Windows, it's bootable off its own OS. If the memory is bad, it
will usually detect it. Let it run AT LEAST one pass, overnight even
better. If there are problems, I'd make sure the memory timings are not
overly aggressive. I recommend "Load BIOS defaults" on the Advanced Chipset
Features page of the BIOS (if it has it, some BIOS's don't expose all
features/optimizations).

First of all, you need to be sure how much memory you motherboard can
support. Next, it may require all memory be of the same type and speed. On
many boards, memory is required to be installed in pairs of matched memory
chips. You need to consult your Owners Manual. You may have to manually
configure your BIOS to accept the new memory, or get updated BIOS from
Compaq. Have you gone to their website and done the necessary research
there?

Ram is sometimes crazy acting. I has to matched 512 chips from my 950
athlon and upgraded to amd xp 2200 and I went crazy trying to setup the
computer and even called the supplier of the mb and tried a million thing.
Until I decided to pull on stick of ram and switched them out until I found
out the one stick was causing the problems. Goofy because the stick would
work on 3 other computers I tried it in and is running strong in the 950
which I gave my grandkids. Ram combinations, chip density, and ram speed
can sometime be real flakey.
