View Full Version : Help- XP doesn't see barcode reader...

My pc has a USB keyboard- now that I've upgraded to XP, it no longer sees
the ps/2 port unless an actual keyboard is plugged in. Temporarily I have a
keyboard plugged into the 'daisy chain' jack of a cue cat bar code reader
(modified to emit straight barcode data)...
Is there something a simple ps/2 keyboard has in it that enables a PC to see
it? The cuecat has an LED which is on, so it is drawing current... what
else is there that I can 'add'.. in the form of a plug? Thanks!

In device manager click on View/Show Hidden Devices to see if the ps/2 port
shows up.

Thanks Gran... you are definitely in the right direction- here's what I
found...
IF the keyboard is plugged in, the standard ps/2 keyboard driver will load.
If I shutdown, unplug the keyboard, reboot- and 'view hidden devices' - I
get the exclamation point next to that driver.
What I need to somehow accomplish is either force XP to load the standard
driver every time- regardless of whether a keyboard is installed or not- OR
add something hardware wise for the PC to see a keyboard....
I guess under Win98/WinMe, they always installed the keyboard driver- since
I never had this problem.
What has me curious- there's not a whole lot inside a keyboard- the PC must
look for something - perhaps current draw- and the LED isn't quite enough??
Any ideas??? Thanks Gran!
