mouse sticking

my mouse intermittently pauses on screen amd then after a
second or two it carries on. Games like spider are the
worst. then all of a sudden it will lock up and
occasionally take the keyboard with it. grrrr. I've
tried another mouse same thing. doesn't seem to be
overloaded system. even with one app running same thing.
Yes I've done a cleanout of hidden apps registry etc.

My best guess right now is either a corrupted OS (XP
home) or hardware conflict

any thoughts
