View Full Version : Using Modem for Caller ID Only

I subscribe to Caller ID (name and number) and I
downloaded/tried several free Caller ID applications,
including My-Vcaller ID, FonXL, ID Commander, AnalogX
among others. None worked. I tried Internet Call
Notification (ICN) that came with my modem, also without
success. My modem is a US Robotics external V.92 - model
USR5686D. It is caller ID capable. My OS is XP-Home.

I don't use my modem to connect to the Internet, rather I
connect via DSL. I only use the modem for outgoing faxes
(which I can do concurrently with DSL running) and backup
dialup if DSL is down. Otherwise, the modem is just
powered on and idle (and connected to COM1).

While connected via DSL, Hyper Terminal and my modem
recognize incoming voice calls (the AA light flashes) but
Hyper Terminal only displays "RING". According to USR
tech support, I can only display Caller ID information on
my computer while the modem is in use (i.e. dialed into
the Internet). Apparently this is the way most Caller ID
applications also work - the modem must be in use.

I seem to have all the right ingredients but I can't get
it to work. And I'm surely not about to give up DSL just
to get Caller ID info to display on my system. My
question - does anyone know how to display Caller ID
info, even though the modem is not dialed into Internet?

Many thanks.
Joe
