BRAND New laptop OUT OF THE BOX 1 HOUR!

Dell gave me one of the exchangeable Floppies/DVD ports.

The UNPLUG or EJECT Hardware icon appears in the lower
right hand corner of the system tray in XP.

It allows you to request to remove the DVD…then prompts…OK
safe to remove your DVD Drive.

As soon as you plug in the floppy drive…XP recognizes the
floppy and pops up a screen. USB Sony Floppy installed
and working.

I’m able to go to the floppy and copy files and access the
drive to read .txt files from it.

But there is a 16 Bit Setup.exe that WILL NOT RUN….

SAME DISK, runs ON EVERY DELL desktop running the same
version of XP.

I’ve tried multiple programs on multiple floppies…NO error
produced…XP just displays the hourglass briefly then back
to a mouse pointer when I try to run a .exe from the flopy.

I’ve tried from Start Run. (Nope)
I’ve tried from dos prompt (Nope)
I’ve tried double clicking the .exe in the explorer (Nope)
I’ve tried right clicking and picking open while
highlighting the .exe (Nope)

NOTHING.

Once I got ONE .exe briefly started (Install flash screen
popped up after trying to run 10 times)…Then it
immediately stalled.

The Task manager does not show anything running EVER.
Except the ONE befiefly stalled .exe I mentioned above…
then it showed NOT RESPONDING on the .exe. But only the
once on one program.

If I copy files from the floppy to the hard drive, they
copy fine. I can open an .txt file just fine by clicking
it in explorer.

If I stick the same floppy in another computer and MAP the
drive over to the other computer the install works fine!

Virus scan is Norton and up to date!

BUT I HAVE TO INSTALL OFF OF THE A DRIVE…the program is
written to look at the Floppy Drive Label and also check
to see that is excecuting from a ! *******S!

Is there any security on XP that would prevent me from
executing on the floppy?

This is a very strange one. How do I explain to DELL that
the floppy won't execute, but I can open files and copy
them! They won't believe me.

Any ideas out there?

I've tried rebooting and powering off...Still same exact
behavior.

I'm possitive there is NOTHING wrong with floppy diskette.
I can run it on 5 other XP PC's.
