Woodzy--
BTW--can you please name *what process* seems to be using CPU timeslices or
cycles?
I'd run Spybot and Ad Aware and do a viral scan at the minimum, but
probability says this problem isn't a virus--and an app like Spyware
Blaster may help with pre-empting something in the equation that may be
causing this. Often spyware/malware will cause this or be a/the major
contributor in this equation rather than the individual process alone.
I'd also highly recommend consulting Black Viper's site on which other
processes you might be able to kill. Windows XP . and SP1 usually has
32-40+ processes running in the background, and you don't need a number of
them in most cases, and this site can be helpful with this:

Spybot can be downloaded from

Ad-Aware can be downloaded from:

Spyware Blaster from:

That's what the process is called simply "system"

The System process can be consumed by many things. It could be there is an
application and/or other process that is dependent on the system that is
leaking memory (why you see the memory count so high). It could be a bad
device driver or something with the .NET framework.
When you first boot the system, does it immediately go to 50-75% and 220K of
usage or is it something that builds over time? If it is immediate, that
points to something loading up (device driver, .NET framework). It if
builds over time, it is likely an application or other process causing the
problem.

well the drivers seem to be uptodate and all ms updates are
applied...is there a freeware process watcher or startup watcher
somewhere that may help diagnose this or is it a common service ?
