I recently upgraded to XP from ME and now my DVD player
doesn't work. My DVD ROM is a Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-116
model. The error message says "Windows Media Player
cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is
not installed on your computer". Since I cannot determine
who originally provided the decoder software that came
with ME on my HP Pavilion 7940, how can I get a decoder
upgrade? Does Microsoft provide any free decoder upgrades
for this problem?

All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your Pavilion came with 3rd party software (probably WinDVD) .... it also
came with a whole set of CDs. I believe the last CD in the set is the
applications CD... look in the manual and it will tell you how to install an
individual application.
