Can't write on cdrw drives?

My drives work and are acknowledged by XP but on my
external CDRW says it is a cdrw! the internal says just a
D:/cd-rom I have a cd creative program installed and the
drives still tell me they are not accessable and I can't
write on any cds. Now they do read a cd and they do play
musio. So what is going on??? Did I somehow loose an
application? I did not get an non compatible warning on
the cd creative installment. How do I make my drives be
able to write??
