View Full Version : WINXP does not see my 3rd hardrive
Karl
December 7th 03, 12:48 AM
I have 2 hard dirves on my ASUS A7V MB installed in the Primary Ultra 100 IDE connector slot and they are both recognized.
I had another HD out under an RMA warranty and got it back to-day. It is an 80 GB Deskstar by IBM now Hitachi.
Windows finds the new harddrive but I cannot see it when I go to Explore.
So I cannot format that drive because I cannot see it either under Explore or System, Hardware, Device Manager. BUT _ I definitely saw that WIN XP found the new harddrive.
This latter harddrive is installed in the Primary IDE Connector. I tried it as slave and now as master. It makes no difference. I cannot see the drive.
What do I do now?

How can windows "recognize" the HD but then not recognize it? Do you
mean the BIOS POST, which runs when you first turn on your computer,
BEFORE the OS loads, shows it?
You also said you currently have two HDs connected on the primary IDE
channel, then said the "new" (sort of) HD is also connected to the
primary channel. That's not possible; only two devices can exist on
each IDE channel at a time.
Please clarify these issues for more help.

It is like I said.
WinXP does "find" new hardware, even tells me very quickly the correct name,
but then when I go to Explore I could not see it. In the meantime I did
format via Partition Magic 8.0 and WINXP now sees it under Exploer.
BUT - in the BIOS it shows this disk as the only choice for bootup and of
course it never gets to windowsxp, since this disk does not have the OS on
it, but rather disk C;
So I disabled it (the only choice) and that boots up fine then.
Why does BIOS not allow me to chose C disk? (a separate physical disk)?

I'm confused, but I think what you're saying is that your computer has
separate ATA and standard ide controllers...is that correct?
If so, you need to go into the bios and set it to boot from the ATA
controller.

Yes, your assumtion is correct. Separate.
Is there a cable that has THREE connections to put all 3 drives on the
Primary Ultra ATA 100 IDE Controller? That might also fix the boot up
problem.
I have another question. Someone suggested to go to Disk management
I have gone there and had expected I could make the Total drive a logical
drive. But that is not an allowable optionIt allowed about 12000MB as
Logical option and a minimum of 8MB. I chose 8 and chose not to give it a
drive letter.
That made remainder of the disk D which is fine with me. BUT I see now D as
being 7667MB yet I know the disk is an IBM Deskstar with 82.256 GB.
Where did the difference go? There is nothing from my side on the disk.

Whether there is a cable or not, it wouldn't work as the controller itself
is limited to two. If you're using a separate controller card, go into the
bios and see if you can set it to boot from SCSI first. If not, there might
be a setting for "other." You don't want it booting from ide at all in this
case.

It's a math issue. Someone will show up and do the math to explain it in
detail, but the short answer is that you're really not missing anything.

I understand the last part of your answer, will digest the first later.
But it is not the rounding of GB and the number of Bytes in a MB or GB,
BECAUSE it says that 84.4 MB are USED! Used by what?
I cannot see a folder to see what files there may be.
But I (!) did not use anything on this disk yet.

But my much bigger problem is now that I cannot boot up with the 3rd disk .
I am familiar with the BIOS but not sure where you want me to change. Can
you be specific.
I am still believing, it has something to do with the PIN SELECTION on this
drive. It is the 3rd drive inside my computer, 2 are working on the Primary
Ultra ATA 100 with 80 ribbon cable, this drive sits with 80 ribbon cable in
the Secondary Ultra ATA slot as master, but I cannot get the pin connection
right, even after studing it in documents at the Hitachi site.
I have printed the jumper positions out on
paper. I tried everything that pertained to MASTER.GH and AB left me black
screen. I did see in the POST that all 3 drives were seen.
EF and AB did not work either. Black screen.
GH and EF gave my winxp desktop but no drive D (which this would be). It
gave me all other dirves.
GH and CA gave me desktop, but no drive D.
EF and CA left black screen
I am running out of selections pertaining to a Master.
Really difficult.
Appreciate your continued input though very much. I also left an e-mail at
the Hitachi site.
But still would love to get it working.

Just got it to work. Tested it for th 2nd time.
WD and Hitachi on same cable. Master and Slave
Seagate on separate cable Master.
Above in Primary Ultra and the last one in Secondary Ultra.
CD ROM separate cable in Primary IDE as Master
CD Burner on separate cable in Secondary IDE as Master
Also downloaded and installed the latest BIOS from ASUS.
I hope all stays because it seems I tested this setup days ago. But anyhow,
it works now. (O, I did not have separate cables for CD's)
