I'm not sure if you're refering to the taskbar, (the one
with the start button and system notification area on it)
or the Explorer bar, (the blue panel on the left hand
side of various windows).

Taskbar -- This is not "closeable," but you *CAN* hide
it!:
1) right click on an empty area of it.
2) point at the properties listing in the menu displayed
3) click on properties
4) in the top half of the dialog box are 5 checkboxes.
Make sure the *second* box, "Auto-hide the taskbar," is
checked.
5) Click on the OK button on the bottom of the dialog box.

Explorer bar -- This is closeable, to get back
your "classic" windows views:
1) open any window.
2) left-click (usually refered to as click; if right/left
isn't specified, it's left) on "Tools"
3) point to and click on "Folder Options..."
4) the first box has two "radio" buttons. Radio buttons
give you a choice of one of two or more options. Click
on the second choice, "Use Windows classic folders"
5) click ok at the bottom

Also, if you want to bring your start menu back to the
pre-XP look:
1) Right click on the taskbar again. (If you hide it,
whenever you move your mouse to that side of the screen
it "re-appears" You can also have the taskbar on any of
the four sides of your desktop-top, bottom, right or
left. If you're interested in doing this, post back, I
don't want to overwhelm you!) Select Properties again.
2) On the top of the dialog box are two tabs, "Taskbar"
and "Start Menu." Click on Start Menu.
3) there are two radio buttons. One for "Start menu,"
which displays the "new" XP start menu, and "Classic
Start menu." Select "Classic start menu" and click on OK!

If you want more tips on customizing these things, post
back with what you'd like to change. Or, even better,
try things out! I've found many new things just by
looking and seeing what's where. As long as you don't
change any system files, it's going to be very difficult
for you to "break" your computer, and even if you do, we
can help you bring it back.

Tracy

P.S. I'm sorry if I was too teach-y. From your post, it
sounded like you are new to computers, and so I wasn't
sure how much you knew.
