Has anyone gotten this to work with Win XP? I do have an
installation CD but it says that it will only work on Win
95 and Win 98.
Contacted mustek.com but was not able to get the drivers
for it. Checked on driverguide.com and they has what
appeared to be a driver, but it is the wrong version of
scanner and will not work at all.
Any suggestions are GREATLY welcomed. :)

Hi Todd -
I've been able to get a couple of different Mustek scanners work under
Windows XP, including the 1200 UB, and have helped several others with the
task. My own scanner, a Mustek CUB works perfectly under Windows XP.
Do you have any other working USB devices connected to your system? If not
you may need to go into your system's BIOS and enable USB Support. Check
your system or motherboard manual for details on how to do this. If you
have other working USB devices you don't need to bother with this step.
To start out, take a manual System Restore Checkpoint - just in case we
completely mess things up, you'll be able to go back to where you are right
now.
Before doing anything, you need to clean out your failed attempts at getting
a driver to install. Windows XP may think it has a working driver and may
prevent you from installing a working one.
First, go into Add or Remove Programs and look for the driver software for
your scanner. If you find it, uninstall it and then reboot your system.
Next search your ..\Windows\INF folder (and all sub-folders under it) for
*.INF files which contain the word "scan". Open each one with Notepad and,
if it contains any reference to Mustek or your 1200 UB, rename the file to
something else (such as oem2.OLD). After doing all this, restart your
system with the scanner plugged in. If it isn't detected and doesn't show
up in Device Manager, you're certain that you've cleared out your failed
attempts. The add new hardware wizard will detect it but should not be able
to find a driver. Shut the system down and unplug the scanner. Restart
your computer.
Next you have to deal with the issue of driver signing. I've yet to come
across a Mustek product that has had a digitally signed driver. Windows XP
lets you get around this problem. Go into Control Panel|System and click on
the Hardware tab. Click the Driver Signing button and be certain that
either the "Ignore..." or "Warn..." radio button is pressed (never select
"Block...") and that the "Make this action the system default" box is
checked. Click Apply and OK all the way out.
Next link to:
http://www.mustek.com/Download/driv_scanr/english/1200ub.html
and download all five parts of the "Windows 98/ME/XP (Compatible)" driver
for your scanner. Make certain that you download them all to the same
folder on your hard disk.
Now, with your scanner still unplugged, click on Start | Run and navigate to
the folder where you downloaded the scanner driver files. Run the WEB.EXE
file that you downloaded from Mustek's website (there should be five files
in this folder, though the Run box will only present one -- WEB.EXE,
WEB.W02, WEB.W03, WEB.W04 and WEB.W05). At the end of the driver install
you'll be prompted to restart your computer. Restart. DO NOT PLUG YOUR
SCANNER IN YET.
After Windows finishes booting, plug your scanner into a USB port. Windows
should detect it. Tell the Add New Hardware wizard to search for the best
driver for your new hardware (automatic). It should now detect and find the
driver that you installed from WEB.EXE. You'll probably get a warning that
the driver is unsigned -- don't worry about this, just click on install
anyway.
Hope this helps and good luck!

From my experience, the XP/98 drivers for the 1200 UB are worthless.
They do install, and the diagnostic/test functions work - the scanner
even shows up in the scanner/camera window. When I tried to use it
within a program though the software could never find the scanner.
What will work is installing the 2000 drivers - but you have to trick
the 2000 driver installer software into thinking you have Win2000
instead of WinXP. That's not real hard, and a google search on that
subject will tell you how to hack the registry (and it's VERY easy) to
accomplish it.

Mustek publishes the registry hack solution on their site at:
http://www.mustek.com/Download/driv_scanr/english/english-xp.html
(scroll about 2/3 down the page, under Advanced Users).
There's also the Windows XP tool listed at the top of the above link,
fixwinxp.exe, which neatly accomplishes the registry change, permits the
driver installation and changes the registry back, for those that are
fearful of working with their system registry.
I've used both solutions as I've worked on numerous Mustek scanner
installations before Mustek got off their laurels and released drivers which
work under Windows XP without having to play games with the registry. The
first such installation was my own Mustek CUB, which I installed the day
that Windows XP was released publicly. I used the registry "hack" and
installed the Windows 2000 driver.
I've gotten complete functionality out of the Windows 98/ME/XP driver for
the 1200 UB *when* all failed attempts at getting an older driver to install
have been removed from the system. If there are pieces of the driver still
on the system after an attempted install of the older Windows 98 driver
package, the Windows XP driver will *appear* to install but the results will
be unpredictable (in some cases they'll work; in most cases, results will be
as you describe). This is why I include instructions on removing anything
listed in Add/Remove Programs and the ..\Windows\INF folder. It's also
necessary to have the driver completely installed *before* attempting to
connect the scanner to the system.
The preceding has been true for *all* Mustek scanners I've worked with since
the release of Windows XP.
I am in no way defending Mustek. I've been completely disappointed in their
support for Windows XP on their products which, in many cases, had just been
released as Windows XP came to market. Their driver support, to put it
blunt, sucks.

I'm glad Mustek seems to recognize the problem and has a directions on
how to edit the registry. Even better that they finally posted the
program that does it for those that are faint of heart at the thought
of editing the registry.
I did a clean install of XP, then tried the 98/XP drivers. Since it
was a clean install, there was NO chance any old drivers were still
hanging around. However, the result gave me nada, zip, nil...no
scanner function. Hacked the registry, installed the 2000
drivers...scanner works great.
I guess YMMV on the use of the 98/XP drivers for the 1200 UB.

Some hardware is just to old or drivers were not written of some of the
fairly recent devices. This sounds like the case here. Take your time and
look around for a new one from Best Buy or other sellers with a rebate or on
sale. They can be dirt cheap. Keep the frustration down because some
software or hardware will just not work. Also, a lot of the Win 2k drivers
will sometimes work as a last resort. Ignore the warning message that the
driver was not approved my Microsoft and if it does not work unstall it.
Keep up the good fight and if you do get it to work please post the results!

The 1200UB will work with XP, you just have to have the correct
drivers, and occasionally jump through a hoop or two to get them to
work. This discussion has been going on for several days now.
