Hello all. I have a WD1200(120 gig) hard drive that i am
trying to add as my second hard drive. It is hooked up to
my Dell inspiron 5000 laptop via firewire, the drive is in
a extrenal enclosure using the oxford 911 chip. I just
want to format the damn thing and have windows see all of
it. I can go into device manager and select the hard
drive; it sees a WD1200 with a capacity of about 112 gigs,
but that is all. i have tried several different windows
boot disk in an attempt to format the drive, but i seem to
be limited at 32 gigs. any help would be great thanks.
thanks
Mathiau

yes, the drives are NOT 120g, but only about 111g or so.
the actual size they put on the package is not the actual size - they simply
round it off.
i have 4 of the 120g drives and they all come out to 111g.
as for the 32g part - are you formating it in NTFS as fat 32 can not handle
120g HD's.
also, older BIOS's on computer can not see over 32g - u may need to update
the bios on your system.

Ya, your correct on the NTFS part which is needed for=20
anything over 32gig.
About the 120gig us bit really 120gig...
Hard Drive manufactures list 1gig as 1000 bytes, but=20
windows reads 1gig as 1024 bytes. So 120gig is really=20
117gig, but then after its formated, there is a MBR and=20
other things that consume the other part.
