CD-ROM ASUS 50x dissapears

Hi all,

I have a ASUS 50x CD-ROM which has serve me well past 3 years.
After install Windows XP Pro I've started noticing that this error
occured : after inserting a CD to the drive anb then trying to read
using the file manager it was impossible.
The entire CD-ROM was disapearing from the list of devies.

does anyone has some kind of explanation?
