Trying to use File Transfer Wizard in my new machine (XP)
and transfer files from my old computer (Win98) with
direct serial cable. When I get to the part where I
click Autodetect to select the serial port settings it
says "Please wait while the wizard is connecting to the
other computer. This may take a minute" it never
connects and it keeps trying. I've waited hours for
something to happen. This is obviously a common task,
any ideas what I am missing? Thanks.

What you are missing is a high speed method of connecting the two
computers, such as a network cable.

Serial port connections are slower than slow and it will take hours,
perhaps days, to transfer all of the data this way.

It is also possible to save the transfer data in a \transfer folder on
the Windows 98 machines hard drive and then later to remove the drive
from the Win98 machine and temporarily install it as a second hard
drive in the Windows XP machine.

Post a response back here if you need more detailed advice or
instructions.

Good luck

My theory is you need to set up a direct cable connection on the windows 98
computer for xp to connect to. Or it may need a client application running
on the windows 98 computer.

How to use the files and settings transfer wizard:

Yes. Buy two NICs and a crossover cable (total cost should be
around $25 US). Be sure to buy a crossover cable, not a regular
one. This works only with two computers, not more.
