I have a Toshiba Satellite 1805-S254. I run Win XP w/ SP 1. I have a Toshiba
DVD-ROM SD-C2502. I can play regular CD-ROMs and audio CDs, however I cannot
play DVDs. I've tried updating the codecs for my DVD drive by using the
Toshiba recovery CD and reinstalling WinDVD. I have the latest BIOS for my
machine and have tried installing the latest codecs from
http://windvdzone.cjb.net/. However, that did not fix the problem. I can't
play DVDs in any application, including windows media player. I'm running
out of options. Can someone help me?

There are different lasers to read DVDs, I suspect that your
drive has a dead DVD laser or it is dirty or out of
alignment.
Using CD/DVD cleaners is sometimes NOT recommended. You
might check on your warranty, I think you may need a new
drive.

I have been fighting with the same problem for the past week. Went out
yesterday and bought a new drive ($40.00). Installed the drive, and without
doing anything else, it works fine.
The drives do go bad you know, especially the laser. I read somewhere that
they are only good for about 500 hours, but the guy could very well have
been blowing smoke!

Let's see...500 hours is approximately 250 movies. I would not by any
device that had such a tiny lifespan. I have two toshiba laptops, both with
the combo drive, and have had no problem with either, and have used both for
more that 500 hours (dvd). Sounds like the tech was blowing smoke. I think
it is likely that the drive is just a bad one.
