I built a computer a year ago mainboard kt7pro266ru mainboard,

Athlon 1.4 processor.

I installed 256mb pc2100 ddr of memory.

It worked fine.

A couple of months ago I purchased another 256mb pc2100 ddr module.

When I tried to install this I got continuous reboots at start-up and

a lock out for re-activation.

Then after adjusting the registry autoboot (KB article 314466) I got the
blue screens.

I can't remember the error numbers.

When I removed the new module it would boot up ok.

I sorted out the product activation.

I tried replacing the memory module in slot 2, but the blue screens
returned.

I adjusted the page file size upwards (kb 314466) and moved the memory
module from

dimm slot2 to slot3.

The problem disappeared.

I left that setup configuration till a few days ago.

I thought the computer had slowed since installing the extra memory,

so I experimented by removing the new module.

I left it out for a day or two at only 256mb and I did not notice any

speed change.

I tried replacing the new module in dimm slot 2.

Blue screens again.

I tried different positions.

Final working configurations are

Old module slot 1 new module slot 3.

New module slot 1 old module slot 2.

New module slot 1 old module slot 3.

Failing configuration.

Old module slot 1 new module slot 2.

xp error.

stop: c000021a {fatal system error}

The windows logon process system process terminated unexpectedly

with a status of 0xc00000005 (0x00000000 ox00000000)

The system has been shut down.

In all cases the bios recognised the full 512mb and reports no errors.

Recovery console booted ok.

I noted in this newsgroup there a few cases like this.

I've played 'musical memory modules' before on another machine,

(an Intel AL440LX mainboard with PII 266mhz processor)

but in that case the bios would not start up until the chips

landed in the right place.

I have another machine with 512mb (single module). XP installed and ran on

that without any problems.

xp is meticulous about memory?

New module does not like slot 2?

Old module is double sided, the new one is single sided.

In one working configuration in slots 1 and 2, the single sided chips are

facing away from the double sided. In the others, in the 1 and 3 positions,

facing but further apart, or not facing and further apart.

In the failing configuration in slots 1 and 2, the chips are facing each
other

and not very far apart. Heat build up, or interference?

That's two out of three machines that I have built that

required shuffling around memory modules.

The manuals of both mainboards place no restrictions

on order of memory modules.
