SP1 is the important part, he's right, BUT, I have worked my way (mostly
unsuccessfully) thru a lot of USB2 info, both from Microsoft Knowledge Base
and various other sources on the Web and still do not have a satisfactory
'as advertised' performance from USB2 devices, under XP Home..

This is what i have discovered. Most of the drivers/software that comes
with any hardware are routinely 'kicked-out' by XP in Device Manager.. It
appears USB2 is supported by Microsoft with Microsoft only drivers. So don't
bother trying to install anything that came with any of the USB2 hardware
you bought.. This is as it should be i think; i found over time that XP does
a hell of a lot better if you leave a lot of 3rd party software OFF the
system..
Creative Soundblaster in particular, comes to mind..My soundcard works just
fine without all the 'bloatware' Creative thinks i should install..
I have a Compact Flash card reader/writer that i use for storage and to
transfer stuff to other machines.
I also use a 'thumb drive' once inna while USB2 also.
I have an external USB2 40gig hard drive (in addition to my IDE internal)
i use for storage etc. The enclosure that holds it and the bridge and cable
inside came with USB2 stuff that simply were not allowed by XP(?)

There is ONE common thread that runs thru and with all of this.....I always
get a balloon popup system message that tells me i have a high speed usb2
device connected to a non-high speed hub that is not being used (what?) and
i should connect my usb2 hardware to one of those empty ports (there are 4
external, 1 internal) So, what i am telling you is the PCI USB2 card that i
added and that all the usb2 stuff is connected to is recognized by XP, but
it does NOT for some reason see that these ports ARE, in fact, in use.... I
simply do not 'get it'!!

My PC is not a newer machine either; running AMD T Bird 1.3 with 768 ram
and as i said, although the USB2 stuff 'seems' to run slower than
advertised, it is acceptable.. I honestly don't believe Microsoft has a
handle on the USB2 issue at all...If you should discover anything please let
me know, please.

USB2 support for XP was enabled in SP1,SP1a. That being said, there is
no way that XP itself is going to update USB 1.1 to 2 unless the PCI to
USB Host Controller itself is updated to the use the new drivers. The
easiest way to do this is to remove the host controller from device
manager, and let XP redetect them on the next startup.

I have 5 listings for USB host controller (one for each port on the card) i
also have an enhanced Host Controller.. Does it make sense to remove all of
those? guess i would have to(?)

Enhanced = USB2? Standard = USB 1.1 for certain. I believe that yes,
you do need to do this with each controller to force the upgraded
driver. How one identifies these externally is a mystery to me. I have
4 controllers and have finally figured out which is which. You might
have to consult the MB documentation and trace the cables.

USB2 speed is an issue - it has been written on these NGs that of the
three speeds, only low speed USB2 devices are now available. Mid and
high speed are yet to come. So it has been written.

For AMD, you might want to check with your vendor/main board
manufacturer for any separate updates/drivers needed.
