Hi

I am having some trouble i have just purchased XP after
running ME for a long time, i am using the Home addition
of XP i have recently upgraded my machine and i am
running an ASUS A7V8X motherboard with a single 512mb
Stick of memory, i also have a Hercules 3D Prophet 4000XT
with TV Out and 64mb DDR memory, when i was running
Windows ME i could have my monitor running at 1024x768 my
monitor is a standard 14" RM Nimbus Monitor now the only
option i have is to run at 800x600 i dont even get the
option to run at 640x480 and when i list the modes of the
graphics card it has a range from 640x480 to 800x600 i
know that this is not true, how do i sort this problem it
is also having an effect on running a program called Tru-
Flight which now just resets the machine if you try to
run at fullscreen on any resolution. i have made sure all
of the latest drivers have been installed please help.

My guess is that you did not check for hardware
compatibility before you did the upgrade. Your system was
scanned during installation and the monitor was not
identified, the choices for monitor resolutions and refresh
rates is limited because XP can't identify your monitor.
See if you can get a driver update for your monitor or get a
supported monitor.

I do not think that whether XP reconize a particular monitor is the problem.
Probably a driver issue and the video card. Why anyone would even mess
around with a 14 inch monitor these days is beyond me anyway since the price
of large monitor are so very cheap. Another issue could be the video card
if it is an AGP.

If Windows doesn't recognize the monitor as plug and play it
will default to a minimum display resolution and refresh
rate. It won't allow the higher resolutions unless it has a
driver for that monitor. When you look at monitor
properties it must at least say "plug and play."

If you can't update the monitor file (device manager) I'd
spend $100-$500 and buy a really good monitor that is
supported.
