I did a repair install of XP (Home) yesterday. Everything has come back up
fine, except that the system is using VGASAVE to run the display. The
"display adapter" line is missing from Device Manager, and new ATI drivers
won't install because I get an error message asking me to run in standard
VGA mode (which I can't). Going into the advanced properties section of
display doesn't help either as it gives no option to change the divers
(presumably because its running in VGASave.

I tried physically re-sitting the card (radeon 8500) to no avail.

Can anyone help.

Re-boot and press F8 just after the BIOS screen ends - you should get the
Windows Startup Menu.
VGA mode can be selected from here, then boot and update the drivers.
