hi,

I am have a Win-NT machine and trying to get it upgraded
to Win-XP. My current Windows Partition looks like this:

C: 2039.5 MB FAT
G: 3,992.7 MB FAT 32
D: 6950 MB NTFS

Previously G: contained the Linux installation. Almost 2GB
of the C: is used and mostly contains the Win-NT and the
MS-Office -97 . I bought a Win-Xp upgrade to move from Win-
NT to XP. While installing XP it complained that I will
need another 1.3 GB for XP installation on C:. I tried to
remove all the stuff in C: except Win-NT dir and the MS-
Office-97 still it consuming close to 2GB. So I formated
the Linux partition to FAT 32 (G:). And tried to use
Partition Magic to combine C: and G: to a bigger drive.
Partition Magic has the option of making G: a folder under
C:. But when I booted the next time, Partition Magic
failed to combine the two partitions and gave this error
message:

Error 2003: File Size does not match FAT allocation for
file.

I am stuck here and not able to combine the c: and g: and
hence not able to upgrade to Win-XP.

Please Help!!

Thanks,
Threqu

Unless you convert the G: (Fat32) to the same FAT format, you will never be
able to combine the two partitions.

There is another option. Backup all your important documents and delete C:
& G: partitions. Then, let XP define a new C: partition. The XP upgrade CD
does allow for you to do a full install, but you need the original NT CD so
as to let the upgrade check for upgrade rights.

BTW: You could use Partition Magic to convert C: to FAT32, but this would
render the C: un-bottable, since NT does not like Fat32.

The cluster size must be the same to combine two partitions.
Partition Magic can change cluster sizes.

Why not delete Office 97 from the C:\ partition and after
you finish installing XP on C:\ you can install Office 97 on
G: or D:.

Since you are going to install XP, you can convert G:\ to
NTFS if you want, PM will do that.
