optical mouse problems

I have a trackball explorer optical mouse. Quite often,
when I shut my computer off and turn it back on later the
mouse will not work. I then need to shut down again, plug
in my old mechanical mouse, use that for awhile, shut
down, plug in the trackball again and then it will
usually work. Sometimes I need to do this several times
before it will work. I use a PS2 port. Please help. This
is driving me nuts. Thanks

With a problem like this I first suspect a frayed or broken cable.
