When in windows explorer, double clicking a sub-folder
now opens a search window instead of opening the sub-
folder. Also, if I right click on the sub-folder
icon, "search" is the top/bold item with open and explore
below. I have no idea how this has happened and can't
begin to figure out how to fix it back.

You edited the file type associations for directories with a program for =
versions prior to XP (XP's own dialog is not XP compliant).

Hi Ken,

Go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 /i shell32

If that doesn't correct the issue (and it should) use this automated edit:

Search or CMD Opens When Double Clicking a Folder or Drive (Line 18)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the VBS File: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you
may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double-click the vbs file.
You will be prompted when the script is done.
