I have a new Vaio sony with a 160g hard drive installed.
It is partioned at 25G and 135G. I bought new W/D 160g.
It came with new pci controller card and software. I do
not want to install it. Can I install 80 pin cable and
make the new one slave with jumper and partion it with xp
to 25g and 135g. Will XP format it as the drive is 160g
and it is over the 137g limit. The letter is drive
states XP has a 137g limit. But I have a 160g running now.
Thanks for the help. I know this must sound dumb to you

Do as you proposed and it should work fine..You are limited to 137gb partiton, not drive size..The controller card would solve your
problem in that area..

Windows XP SP1 supports 48-bit LBA. Which supports drives larger than 137
Gig. See: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;303013
You don't need your fancy PCI card. It just enables the hard drive to
transfer at higher speeds. But, I'd assume your Vaio has a fast ATA
controller if it came with a 160 Gig drive and the 80-pin IDE cable.
So, yes, just install the drive as a slave. And format it to 160.
