extremely slow boots and programs not opening

A few days ago, I started experiencing really slow boots,
whereas, they use to be fast. Programs open slowly or not
at all. I get the error message" Such program has
encountered an unexpected problem and needs to close".
I've done very thorough virus scans and came up clean. Is
the hard drive failing?
