I don't know about the memory requirement but I can tell
you that there is a way to get rid of start-up
applications very easily.
Click on Start then choose Run. In the "Open" field, type:
msconfig
A window opens and there is a tab all the way to the
right, if I remember correctly (I am at work right now on
a Windows 2000 machine so I can't check XP), that shows
you all your start-up applications. You can select or
deselect the ones you want.
