ata vs eide
this is a really basic (and stupid) question but what id
the differance between ata and ide hard drives.
I'm trying to but two in a system (an older one on a asus
p2b-f) and it doesn't seem to work out.
Do i want to be setting my jumpers to master/ single and
slave or to cable select and slave?
what is cable select?

Same thing different name, a 40 pin connector ribbon cable
(new cables are 40 pin connector but 80 wires).
Cable select is a method for having factories use any drive
in any combination with dumb assembly line workers. The
position on the cable determines how the drive is seen by
the system, The end is the master and the middle is slave.
The jumpers are set to cable select. Factories can set all
drive jumpers the same and that saves them time.
In each computer, there are usually two EIDE connectors on
the motherboard and each can have two drives. Each
"channel" must have a master and if there are two drive on
one cable one must be master and the other slave. Normally,
you put hard drives on the primary channel and optical
drives on the secondary.
