I have an Nvidia Geforce 2 MX graphics card, and have
recently updated the drivers to the latest from Nvidia.
It worked fine for a while, but now has this problem
when the computer is started after being off for a
while. In the initial boot screen (black, with all
your hardware info) it displays random characters which
jump around, as windows loads there are vertical lines
down the screen, and when windows has loaded, it leaves
trails behind the mouse, distorts everything, and
always comes up in 640x480 mode. It also shows this
message "your display resolution and color depth are set
to a low level, do you want windows to adjust these for
you automatically?" but clicking yes doesn't help.
If I restart the PC immediately, it comes back with no
problems at all, and is in my default resolution of
1024x768, but always gives me this same message "your
display resolution and color depth are set to a low
level, do you want windows to adjust these for you
automatically?" but it makes no difference if you click
yes or no because it is already in 32 bit colour and
1024x768 resolution, and it doesn't change these
settings.
I have tried uninstalling the Nvidia drivers and using
the original microsoft ones again, but no change, I
have also now completely reinstalled windows after
formatting the hard disk, but still have the same
problem. (I have a second hard disk which i didn't
format, but used to keep all my files on whilst
reinstalling windows on the C drive - could it be a virus
although I have Norton 2002, with up to date definition
files?).
Does anyone know what is happenning or how to fix it?
Please help!
Neil

Not that I know of. To be honest I don't even know what
you mean by firmware! I updated the drivers to the
latest Nvidia unified driver package (44.03), which they
say will drive all their cards, but nothing else, and I
have since formatted the C drive and completely re-
installed windows but the problem is still there.
