Messenger setup (audio)

I keep receiving the following when I test my hardware in
win xp pro:

control panel,sound etc, sound and audio,voice:
Error occured during direct play voice setup, then
dpvsetup.exe 0x8000 4005.

I tried the setting (moving the slider)microsoft has
indicated. No luck. Can anyone help.
