View Full Version : USB 2.0 not running at correct speed
Abba
December 7th 03, 01:33 AM
When attempting to connect an external drive to any USB
jack I get a window that says that I'm attempting to plug
a high speed device into a low speed hub.
My motherboard is set up for 2.0 and all plugs on the
motherboard have been reviewed and are correct. The
latest drivers for the motherboard have been installed.
SP1 has been installed. The drivers are the latest
versions according to KB artice 329632.
Any ideas?

Do you have any ! marks showing in device manager under USB devices?

Is the USB port or ports you are attempting to use on the front panel
of your computer case? The reason I ask is that I had a motherboard
that fully supported USB 2 that came with a "cbox" that installs in a
floppy bay and has four USB 2 ports on it. Despite the board
supporting USB 2 (and SP 1 being installed), using the front-mounted
ports with a high speed USB device always resulted in the same message
that you've received.

Certain motherboards also contain /both/ USB 1.1 ports
and USB 2.0 ports - if that's the case, you'll want to
try other ports on the motherboard as well.

Hi Crusty, thanks for your suggestion, I've checked the
device manager and all is clear. I even called the mfr of
the motherboard and they suggested that it was a software
setting on XP, I've searched....Still no luck, if you
have any ideas I would appreciate it. Thanks again for
your help, Abba

Thanks David.....I considered that option and made sure
that all my USB connection were in line with the mfr.
manual. Thanks for your help. If you have any other
suggestions, I would welcome them, Abba

Have had the same problem with XP Home and USB2.0... An external HD works at
'advertised speed' sometimes other times only 950kbs and while satisfactory
speed, it is not (i don't think) USB2.0.. I have tried everything inclusing
a suggestion that I uninstall the USB Enhanced in Device Manager and the 5
USB hubs listed, reboot and let XP recognize the hardware and the devices
connected to it; the same message keeps showing up.... The drivers/ software
that comes with the enclosure the HD goes into gets routinely 'kicked-out'
of the configuration and will not run, XP insisting on using ONLY its own
drivers etc...
Believe me when i say I have tried it all, and have had HELP from techs on
this newsgroup and nothing has worked successfully, even though, as i said,
the stuff works (including a Compact flash card reader) but NOT the way it
should.. I do not, at this point believe that Microsoft has any 'handle' on
USB2.0.... Be sure you have SP1 installed too, even then, it 'ain't workin
right! The only ting i can imagine being the culprit is, maybe my mobo
doesn't support USB2 and i just dont know......I think if it has 2 USB1.0
ports on it, it should also be able to deal with USB2.0 but i can't find
anything that tells me on Asus site????...
If you find anything that gives you satisfaction with this, please let me
know..

Why do you think that if a motherboard has 2, USB 1 ports on it that the M/B
should be able to deal with USB 2.0? That is a totally incorrect assumption.
If you don't have the hardware, USB 2.0 isn't going to work - period!

hardware on the mobo or an add-in PCI card which i have installed?....does
the mobo itself have to support the USB2.0 or will they add-in PCI USB2.0
card work? it's o.k. to say i have made an incorrect assumption, how about
clarifying that for me, i am not that bright!

Have you removed the USB Host Controllers from Device Manager, and let
XP redetect with the new drivers? The correct controllers will say
Enhanced, not Standard.

Ah! Totally different scenario than the OP.
I have built in USB 2.0, but the M/B could not handle the current that my
scanner drew. Therefore I also added in an extra USB 2.0 board. Now the
scanner works perfect!
