Are there any issues i should adress before building a
new pc, and in doing so installing win XP on a serial ata
drive?
I am talking drivers, known probs aso.

Win xp pro on

You do not need any special drivers at all with a serial drive
connection (unless it's a two drive RAID). XP will install
normally.

That's not correct Nicholas.

With a single SATA hard drive, XP installation *will* require the OP to
specify a 3rd party driver by pressing F6 when prompted during the install
process and the OP *will* need to provide the necessary SATA drivers on a
floppy disk.

For the OP, some mainboard manufacturers will provide the necessary floppy
disk ready for use but some will require you to copy the SATA drivers from
the supplied CD before installation. If the latter is necessary then you
should download the latest from the manufacturers website to ensure you have
the most recent version.

Hope that helps

I just built a new computer using an ASUS P4P800 motherboard
with a 120GB SATA hard drive. I can assure you, there was no
need to use a special drivers since the SATA connection is directly
on the motherboard. Windows XP installed flawlessly.

Now, if a SATA PCI interface card is required, then you might need
a special driver. But the ASUS P4P800 does not require a special
SATA PCI card.

My apologies Nicholas

The very latest Intel chipset does indeed *fully* integrate the SATA
controller and the mainboard selected by the OP does have this chipset. In
that particular scenario I shall bow to your personal experience with the
board in question. :o)

However there are several other mainboards which include the SATA controller
on the mainboard, my own included, and do require the introduction of the
specified drivers by the user. It is not restricted solely to separate PCI
card controllers.

There have also been some posts to this NG regarding problems with Asus
boards when DDR400 RAM has been used, the OP should ensure they are using
the very latest BIOS during installation (I think the next to be released
will be F06). That combined with the posters I've assisted with problems
with Asus implementation of the previously described on-board SATA
controllers have left me a little wary of Asus boards.

As I've indicated in a follow-up post to Nicholas' response, with the
mainboard you are contemplating there may well be no requirement to specify
the 3rd party drivers for a single SATA drive. Nicholas has said he is
currently using that exact board and so his personal experience is more
relevant. My advice holds for mainboards with an on-board SATA controller
which may not be fully integrated (up to, but not including, Intel 865
chipsets).

With your specified mainboard watch for possible conflicts with DDR400
memory sticks, which have been reported with Asus boards and 800Mz FSB
processors.

Make sure you have latest BIOS and any other updates from the manufacturer,
don't rely on the latest being already loaded or on the supplied CD.

Hope that helps

Thanks a bunch both of u...

The integration of the sata controller in the N-bridge is
probably the reason why i cannot find the sata-raid
driver (floppy thong) on asus website.

As to ram im thinking of Kingston HyperX 400 2*256.
Anandtech have tested this on the de-luxe ver. of the
mobo and there seems to be no probs.
Anyone heard of problems with this combo:
Asus P4P800
Kingston hyperX 400 2*256mb
???

Hi Jon

Glad that together we were able to resolve the confusion.

The issue with DDR400 memory and 800Mhz FSB processors was reported when
using a different mainboard to the one you have selected. Where the OPs
involved followed-up on the posts, the issue was resolved by upgrading the
BIOS to a preliminary release of version 1006. The Asus website now has
version 1007 available for download so I'd assume that particular issue has
now been resolved.

Hope that helps
and thanks for following up on the posts
