I have recently installed XP as an upgrade for Windows
Me. Now it apparently does not recognize either my
printer or scanner when they are connected to the USB
ports. Does anyone know how to correct this? Is there
anyone at Microsoft with enough knowledge to help me out?
I have been trying to get this corrected for more than a
week and have spent hours on the phone and online to no
avail.

Go to the manufacturer's sites and look for Windows XP drivers for
your devices. Install the drivers first and then plug in the
devices. It is not the responsibility of Microsoft to make sure
hardware works with the operating system. It is the responsibility
of the hardware manufacturer to provide compatible drivers. Some
have chosen not to do so. I have a Visioneer scanner and a Canon
BJC-5100 printer which have been orphaned because the manufacturers
abandoned them. No to mention tape drives which have backups which
cannot be used because the manufacturers got out of the business.

I think you will find the problem is with Micrososft support, or lack of
support for USB2.0 in XP..Despite what they say about SP1 etc etc.... XP
supplies pretty much all the drivers you need and installing drivers from
the manufacturers website is usually not the answer, especially with regard
to USB2.0........there ARE no drivers available outside of Mucrososft
according to licensing arrangements.. This is what i have found, this is
what i have been told and a search anywhere else but Microsoft will show you
that your printer or scanner will work with Windows supplied drivers, or you
may need to update your hardware if it's that old.. I can't imagine that
most hardware can't be made to work. More than likely, your particular
problem is related to installing XP as an upgrade over ME, which is and was
a bad idea..
My PCI USB2.0 card doesn' function the way it should and no other drivers
work with it except Microsofts..

USB is enabled from the BIOS. This happens before any operating
system is loaded. Either the motherboard supports it natively or an
add-on card supports it internally. Once again, these devices are
detected before Windows loads. If the motherboard does not support
USB 2.0, no software drivers can force it to be supported.
Microsoft supplies Application Programming Interfaces to the
manufacturers of devices which use the USB bus. The printer,
scanner or other equipment manufactures have to write drivers to
implement the APIs. Microsoft may, as a convenience, supply common
hardware drivers with its operating system. These drivers are
nevertheless the products of the manufacturers and not Microsoft.

Manufacturers want you to buy new hardware. They don't want you to
continue to use the same devices for ten to fifteen years. How
would they make money if no one bought anything new?

So Mr. Parrish, are you saying even if i add a PCI USB2.0 card to my Asus
a7v mobo it will not allow USB2.0 ? Are you saying that USB1.0 support on
the mobo means that i can't get USB2 speed even with an add-in card? If
this is so, i don't understand why anyone would advertize USB2.0 support by
buying a USB2 PCI card and adding it would enable USB2. if it won't work
????(because the mobo doesn't support usb2).....

I said that you cannot force the motherboard to support USB 2.0 if
it is not built-in. Add-on USB 2.0 cards provide their own support
regardless of the motherboard. This is done either through firmware
on the card or software added from a disk. The support supplied by
software would not be available when the operating system is not
loaded. If the support is in the firmware of the card, the card
will show up during hardware enumeration in the POST. If you look
in your Device Manager you will see the source of the support by the
name assigned to the device.
