View Full Version : Hard drive not detected during XP installation

I currently run XP off an S-ATA hard. I was wanting to
install a second and run it in RAID. I was told I had to
format both drives first. So I connected the 2nd S-ATA
drive and attempted to reinstall windows. I loaded the
RAID driver floppy that the motherboard manufacturer gave
me. Everything seemed to be working fine. It asked me
if I wanted to reinstall windows or repair. I chose to
reinstall it. Directly after that screen it told me that
it could not detect any hard drives and the setup had to
quit. I do not understand this since XP already
recognizes the drive that I now have. I also have an IDE
hard drive connect. I guess it doesn't recognize that
either. What's the problem?

Hi Jay

It's not clear from your post exactly when during the install process you
are introducing the SATA RAID drivers, but I'll assume that it's when
prompted to Press F6 for third party drivers.

If you are intending to install XP on a RAID array then you will need to
configure the RAID BIOS first. Your motherboard CD should have a RAID
manual which describes this process (their website should also have it).
Then boot from the XP CD and install as normal, specifying the 3rd party
RAID drivers as required. It might be worthwhile checking your motherboard
manufacturer's website for latest BIOS and RAID controller in advance.

hope that helps
Pete
