scan disk

Does anyone know why windows xp wont do a scan disk for
errors without restarting the computer? Every time I try
to do a scan disk I get a message up saying windows
cannot do a scan disk without restarting windows, is this
common? thanks

In Windows XP, scandisk is replaced by chkdsk, otherwise known as 'error
checking'. Chkdsk /f can only be run on the system partition before Windows
starts.
