I have a computer with 4gb of ram, however the OS only
shows me 3gb. The bios shows 4gb and my ram utility
reports all 4. The Motherboard actually will support up
to 12gb and is enabled to report all and shows me 4gb.
Is there any way to have XP Pro show and use all 4 gb
available.

Thanks,

Allen

Yes.

Post more details, what motherboard and BIOS, what size and
number of modules? Are they installed on the motherboard or
in a riser of some sort?

Thanks for the reply, here are more specs...

SuperMicro Motherboard X5DA8
not sure about the bios thingy
RAM installed in pairs per SuperMicro directly on
Motherboad
Slot 1 - 1gb
Slot 2 - 1gb
Slot 3 - 512mb
Slot 4 - 512mb
Slot 5 - 512mb
Slot 6 - 512mb

I have moved the RAM around, removed RAM and the max I
can get recognized by the XP Pro OS is 3gb.

I hear tell that the problem may lie in the *real* number
for the RAM which is 4096mb which is more than the 4000mb
RAM limit for XP Pro but this sounds a little fishy. I
also heard of a Physical Addressing Extension mod for
Windows 2000 server which allows adjustment of the
boot.ini file but no such file exists for XP Pro.

Thanks in advance,

Allen

I think the problem is the 512 MB sticks, to reach 4 MB you probably need to have 1 GB in each slot.

To find out about your computer and the BIOS, download the free Bel Arc Advisor from www.belarc.com or AIDA32 from http://www.aida32.hu/aida32.php and see the total picture, motherboard serial numbers, BIOS make and version, AIDA32 even can tell you which factory made the RAM that you bought with a label on it from a sales company.

Here is the manufacturer's website http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/MotherBoards/E7505/X5DA8.htm for that board.

It has special requirements for memory listed, that is your problem, some of your memory may not be compatible for the board.
a.. Up to 12 GB ECC registered DDR-200/266 memory in 6 DIMM slots*
b.. Supports only registered ECC memory. Non-ECC or unbuffered memories are not supported.
c.. Two-way interleaved memory banks provide outstanding memory performance. (must use a pair of DIMMs for memory to function)
(Memory recommendation list)
Links to the motherboard manual are about half way down this page http://www.supermicro.com/PRODUCT/Manuals/UsersManual.htm

I've had fun solving the problem.

Thanks for the reply...

I actually went down this path already. I have the
Belarc software installed and it actually knows that i
have the 4gb of ram installed.
The problem appears to be that MicroSquish XP Pro will
not recognize that I have 4GB of ram. I am just trying
to find out how to make it "see" the 4 total.
The ram I have is from the SuperMicro recommended list,
it is ECC and it is interleaved.

Do you happen to know how to make XP Pro actually "see" a
real system that has 4gb of ram???

Thanks again!

2-3 Installing DIMMs

Note: Check the Supermicro web site for recommended memory
modules:

http://www.supermicro.com/TECHSUPPORT/FAQs/Memory_vendors.htm

CAUTION

Exercise extreme care when installing or removing DIMM

modules to prevent any possible damage. Also note that the

memory is interleaved to improve performance (see step 1).

DIMM Installation (See Figure 2-2)

1. Insert the desired number of DIMMs into the memory slots,
starting with

Bank 1. The memory scheme is interleaved so you must install
two

modules at a time, beginning with Bank 1, then Bank 2, and
so on.

2. Insert each DIMM module vertically into its slot. Pay
attention to the

notch along the bottom of the module to prevent inserting
the DIMM

module incorrectly.

3. Gently press down on the DIMM module until it snaps into
place in the

slot. Repeat for all modules (see step 1 above).

Memory Support

The X5DA8/X5DAE supports up to 12 GB of ECC registered
DDR-266/200

(PC2100/1600) memory. The X5DAL-G/X5DAL-TG2 supports up to 8
GB of

registered ECC or unbuffered DDR-266/200 (PC2100/1600)
memory. All

motherboards were designed to support 2 GB modules in each
slot, but

have only been verified with modules up to 1 GB in size.

which part do you want?? Maybe I should just send out
one of the RAM chips and that would solve my problems...
Then I would only have the 3gb and viola... no problem
with the XP OS :)

I am in Oregon with a group that does all of the
mentioned ecosystems...

This system is being used as a video production station,
striped disk set and NewTek Video Toaster hardware.

Any ideas on how to make XP Pro recognize the full
compliment of 4096mb of RAM???

Thanks again,

Allen

Turn off the interleaving. Interleaving refreshes half the banks
while the other half is being read or written to. This is supposed
to improve the performance of slow RAM. It cuts your effective
memory in half. Your two GB of 512 MB chips would be seen as one GB
by the operating system. For interleaving to work the memory
modules must be identical. The two one GB modules must not be
identical so they are not interleafed.

If I'm reading the mobo manual correctly, try putting 2 512
modules in pairs in slot 3 and 2 512 modules in slot 4.

|
|
|
|
|
| Allen

I seem to remember reading in these groups, a while back, that there was a
registry change that had to be made if you are using more than 3 gig of RAM.
Obviously, it affects few people, and, seeing as how I am not in that
category, I did not pay much attention to the post.

Maybe you can do a search in Google/Groups
