Program M not responding

Recently, when working in MS Word 2002 using Revision Marks, I used the
controls to turn off viewing the marks while editing. Very shortly
thereafter, I got a message that said Program M is Not Responding and will
be shut down... which it didn't. Things when haywire from there: my
computer shut itself off and then turned itself back on several times!

In a recent discussion with a friend of mine, he said SP2 for XP fixes this
"known problem" -- but there is not SP2, and I cannot find in the MS
knowledgebase where this is know at all.

The error has appeared off and on since then. What to do?

Perhaps they were referring to the Service Releases for Office XP?
