Simply put, it stops during the shutdown process. Right
at the point where it should shut off, the screen comes
up, "It is now safe to shut down the computer". After
that, I can't seem to do anything but shut down the power
completely to get it to shut off. This is obviously not
the way it is meant to shut down.

This is a new install of XP Home addition on a "new" hard
drive. Very few apps put on it. There is an external
USB writer attached but at times is not on upon shutdown.

Your Help will be appreciated.

Thanks

John

This is normal behaviour for an older Motherboard (the HD is
irrelevant) or one that does not properly support ACPI. You also get
this behaviour if you had disbled ACPI in your BIOS Setup (as was
recommended for some early MS OSes). If you have installed XP with
ACPI disabled, simply reenabling it in the BIOS will not restore the
behaviour you want - at least a Repair reinstall of XP is required.
