CD Drives/IDE Controller Missing

I have an intermittent issue with Both of My CD Drives
Dissapearing, (one Read/Write, one Reader), when they
don't appear they don't even appear in the BIOS, it's
really intermittent, it only happens on a reboot, they
will never disappear as long as the computer is on it
seems. When the drives are not detected I don't even see
the primary or secondary IDE Controller listed in the
control panel of XP?????????? I updated the Bios, that
didn't fix it, I've been told by service to restore the
system, sounds like the cheap fix, and it would only be
sure to happen again.
Any ideas?

If the BIOS is losing track, I'd change the battery on the
mobo, most commonalty a 2032.
