I have so many videos that I have had to backup to CD and DVD, but I want to
leave shortcuts in My Documents that point back to these files on discs. I
know you can create a shortcut that will basically point to "F:\myfile.avi",
but if the incorrect disc is in your F:\ drive, then you get an error
message. I was hoping there was a way to create smarter shortcuts that will
point to a disc by title "MOVIES_02\myfile.avi" (or something like that), so
that when I double click the shortcut file, it will actually say "Please
insert the disc titled 'MOVIES_02'". Since my collection is starting to
scatter over 30+ discs, this would be so helpful for figuring out where to
look for it.

I know that on a Mac (from using them years ago) any file you made an
"alias" of off of a floppy would always prompt you for the floppy by name...

Thanks,

Well, we can't make the shortcuts work any differently than they do but I do
have a few suggestions....

You can rename a shortcut to whatever you want. Use descriptive names.

Right click on a shortuct and select Properties. There is a box called
"Comments." Type a note into the text box (perhaps Disk 2 or Disk1?) and
click OK. When you hover your mouse over the shortcut, the comment text will
be displayed in the tooltip that pops up.
